New technologies have ushered in an age of observation, where police activities may be captured on tape, hard drive and cell phone memory cards, in situations heretofore unimagined. Controlling conduct and appreciating the ever-present and increasingly watchful eye of the public is important for every law enforcement organization.

The Police Complaint Center has used cutting edge technology for over three decades to document police behavior. After winning four Emmy awards for our hidden camera investigations, we are now offering police officials a behind the scenes look at the impact of new technologies on law enforcement. Can YouTube, Facebook and chatroom activity impact your credibility? Can video posted on the Internet hurt your agency?

The Police Complaint Center is now offering 21st-Century Policing: Cops, Cameras and Cyberspace. 21st-Century Policing is a web-based training seminar for law enforcement. There is no traditional classroom.  Our instructors are based in Washington, DC, Tallahassee, Florida and, London, UK. Officers and administrators may participate from any location with computer access and a telephone saving costs in travel and overtime.

The program addresses ethical issues in the context of modern day technologies. We explore public relations, the importance of democratic values in law enforcement, and civil rights in the digital age.

Participants are encouraged to discuss complex issues online.The course examines, conduct during traffic stops, off-duty conduct, and video postings by the public. The camera has proven to be both friend and foe as an eyewitness to the conduct of police officers. We explore vulnerabilities law enforcement officers share in the digital age.
