DENVER --
The Denver Police Department has arrested Officer Charles Porter, 40, for second-degree assault.
Porter is a 12-year veteran of the Denver Police Department. He was most recently assigned to the gang bureau.
In a statement to 7NEWS, officials said the arrest is the result of an ongoing internal investigation into an incident that occurred on April 18, 2008, in the area of West 37th Avenue and Pecos Street.
The Denver Post has reported that officials were investigating whether Porter used excessive force on a 16-year-old. A lawyer told the Post, Jose Valasquez received a lacerated liver and broken ribs after an incident involving several officers.
A decision on formal charges is not expected from the District Attorney’s Office until sometime next week.
Officer Porter was booked through the Denver Sheriff's Department and has bonded out.
He is currently suspended without pay.
