How to stop Police Abuse! 2 Months, 1 Week ago
I believe one of the truly effective ways to change policies in regard to police tactics and procedures is thru public outcry and negative press.

It is time for the "American People" to stand up and declare in a loud voice "I shall not put up with police abuse any longer" all across our country many private citizens are being abused and brutilized by the police on a daily basis.

We are being abused by the same folks whom our tax dollars support, the same folks who are supposed to be serving and protecting have become our abusers and brutilizers. Don't be afraid to speak out. Make their abuse and misconduct known to the public.

You've started down the right road to ending your problems with the police simply by posting your experience here. Negative publicity such as posting in police abuse forums can have a big effect in ending police abuse.

Police are currently seen in a very negative way all across our country and can't survive much negative press. Also the police routinely read these forum posts in an attempt to stall or build a defense for themselves before the storm hits. After your story becomes more publicized, the pressure of the negative press may force them (officals, mayor, chief) to take action in regard to changing the way they deal with people. Remember they are our civil servants paid for with our tax dollars not some gang of lawless thugs. Ok some are but most aren't.

Further more don't be afraid to use the "good-ol-boys" name and the name and address of the police department in your postings. By identifying the offenders you put them and their department in the spotlight instead of yourself. By identifying the offenders you've put the public on notice as to who these "good-ol-boys" are...and believe me many folks in your community will start watching the offenders and their activities. Also this will give others abused by these "good-ol-boys" the courage to come forward and speak out also. The more negative press there is concerning these "good-ol-boys" out there in public view, the more likely the officals, mayor, or police chief will finally take the steps necessary to stop this abuse.

Also understand that the police have set up "Google Alerts" so anytime something is posted on the Internet containing the name of the department or the officer's name they are alerted and they will immediately check out your posting.

I suggest that you do a browser search and post your story in every police abuse forum and thread you can find. Start by posting your story in each of the threads contained in the forum on this website then post at the following:

copwatch international
copwatch.com

See my posting here in the forum "share your experiences." The thread is called "Coweta Sheriff Depart. & Newnan Police Misconduct" later today a man from Louisiana will be posting a reply to my post with more links to other sites where we can post misconduct complaints.

You need to go to the The United States Department of Justice and file a formal complaint against these "good-ol-boys" who have abused you. You can do it online and it's free. This will not only get the department's attention but it also sends a direct message to these "good-ol-boys" that it's over for them and you’re not going to put up with anymore of their abuse. By doing this it will also get the message across to the rest of the "good-ol-boys" that to continue abusing you and your family will not be tolerated and to continue to do so will only end badly for the police abusers.

The United States Department of Justice will start an investigation and they will find evidence of misuse, misconduct, and police abuse on the part of this "good-ol-boy". If they feel there is enough evidence of misconduct, police abuse, or criminal activity they will bring federal charges against the department and officers involved. Now understand this! Any police department found guilty at a federal level of misconduct, abuse, brutality, ect. can lose any federal funding they are currently receiving. Most departments depend on federal funding for at least 25% of their operating budgets. Obviously they will do anything to protect their funding and will take the steps necessary to reign in their rouge "good-ol-boys".

Also you should file complaints with the following:
The Federal Bureau of Investigation
Your local Police Oversight Committee
The Civil Liberties Union

Under no circumstances should you file a complaint with the police department's internal affairs division. It's my understanding that if you initiate a complaint with internal affairs all information from their investigation then becomes privileged and then is not admissible in court to be used by you for your defense or prosecution of the "good-ol-boy". They will be contacting you...just ignore them...don't respond to their phone calls or emails.

Feel free to email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
Or you may call me at 678-621-0308

Please keep us informed by posting updates here in your thread. Give me a call if there is anything I can help you with.

Sincerely

Patrick Keeley

I wish it were as simple as contacting the DOJ / FBI but that is very misleading.

More times than not the DOJ will not get involved unless there is loss of life or sever physical damage to an individual.

The FBI is pretty much the same! Look at the recent situation in Shreveport Louisiana. An officer beats the hell out of a 40's something woman who was intoxicated - she made complaints, the Shreveport Police chief never made the video footage available to the Federal Agencies for investigation!

The lady files a Civil Rights Suit on the officer and department - then the FBI and US Attorney wants to start an investigation only after national attention and public outrage?
See more on this story at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxgNKNEtk18
Be fore warned this is very graphic and disturbing video and pictures!

Here are other cases that involve cops beating women:

These are just a few cases! Remember men and minorities are five times as likely to be abused by police!

Here is a synopsis of my recommendations on how to deal with Police abuse:

NEVER FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE OFFENDING DEPARTMENT
The reason I say this is case law referred to as "Garrity". If you file a complaint with the offending department and an IA investigation is initiated, NONE of the information can be used in a criminal action. This is why many times you see an "officer" is allowed to resign and no criminal charges are filed. This is merely Damage Control for the department many times?
Always go one step above the offending agency. Police complaints very rarely get the attention of an agency; it does nothing to deter future misconduct; however civil penalties and the bad press will put them on notice and many times force them to be held accountable!

DOCUMENT EVERYTHING
With covert DVR systems becoming more reasonably priced, it does not make any sense for anyone that has had a past bad experience not to own and install one in their vehicle and their home with one. Video evidence has been used by Police to gain convictions for many years and they hate it when the tables are turned on them. Think about your wife, daughter or mother being assaulted by an out of control police officer, are you willing to allow the scumbags get away with it?

While many times you can’t prevent it from happening, you can arm yourself in a manner that they will not get away with it!

FILE A CIVIL RIGHTS CASE UNDER 1983
Hold them accountable with actions in Federal Court. Monetary damages are about the only way I can see to stop this. Lawsuits get media attention and that in turn puts the police on notice publicly. The monetary awards and stipulations of re-training or being fired and made to answer criminal charges are the only way this will ever stop!
